Writers Series with Min Jin Lee and Erin McHugh at the Dedee Shattuck Gallery
May 1, 2018
This event is sold out. Partners Village Store and Kitchen is pleased to welcome MIN JIN LEE, author of the New York Times bestselling novel PACHINKO to our spring Writers Series on Thursday, May 24th at 6:00pm at the Dedee Shattuck Gallery (1 Partners Lane, Westport). Lee will be in conversation with Erin McHugh, author of several bestsellers, including Political Suicide, soon to be released in paperback.
In Min Jin Lee’s bestselling, magisterial epic, four generations of a poor, proud immigrant family fight to control their destinies, exiled from a homeland they never knew.
In the early 1900s, teenaged Sunja, the adored daughter of a crippled fisherman, falls for a wealthy stranger at the seashore near her home in Korea. He promises her the world, but when she discovers she is pregnant—and that her lover is married—she refuses to be bought. Instead, she accepts an offer of marriage from a gentle, sickly minister passing through on his way to Japan. But her decision to abandon her home and to reject her son’s powerful father sets off a dramatic saga that will echo down through the generations.
Richly told and profoundly moving, PACHINKO is a story of love, sacrifice, ambition, and loyalty. From the bustling street markets to the halls of Japan’s finest universities to the pachinko parlors of the criminal underworld, Lee’s complex and passionate characters—strong, stubborn women, devoted sisters and sons, fathers shaken by moral crisis—survive against the indifferent arc of history.
MIN JIN LEE’S Pachinko (2017) was a finalist for the National Book Award for Fiction, a New York Times 10 Best Books of 2017, a USA Today Top 10 Books of 2017, an American Library Association Notable Book, and an American Booksellers Association’s Indie Next Great Reads. It is a New York Times Bestseller. Pachinko was also a Top 10 Books of the Year for BBC, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, San Francisco Chronicle, the New York Public Library, Seattle Post-Intelligencer, and the Chicago Public Library and was on over 75 best books of the year lists.
Lee is a recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship for Fiction and has received the NYFA Fellowship for Fiction, the Peden Prize from The Missouri Review for Best Story, the Narrative Prize for New and Emerging Writer, and the Reading Women Award.
ERIN MCHUGH is a former publishing executive and award-winning author of more than twenty books of popular nonfiction, including trivia, gay history, children’s books, and much more. She lives in New York City and South Dartmouth, Massachusetts.
