Book Signing with Laurie Robertson-Lorant

On Saturday December 8th, 2018 at from 2pm – 4pm, Poet Laurie Robertson-Lorant will be signing her book, The Man Who Lived Among the Cannibals, as a part of our Holiday Open House.

Fusing fact and fiction, reality and imagination, gravitas and humor, poet Laure Robertson-Lorant, author of Melville: A Biography, creates a sequence of thirty-seven persona poems written, as mentioned above, in Herman Melville’s voice.

Imagine Melville talking with Frederick Douglass before going whaling, witness his erotic advnetures in the South Seas, and eavesdrop on gossip in the Berkshire Hills. These provocative and accessible poems portray Melville as he seeks answers in the Holy Land, faces family tragedies, and compares notes on politics with George Orwell in the belly of a whale.

Laurie Robertson-Lorant is the author of Melville: A Biography, the only up-to-date, full-length, fully annotated, complete, one-volume biography of Melville. After teaching at Berkshire Community College, St. Mark’s School, Southborough, School year Abroad, France, and MIT, Dr. Lorant is currently a Full-Time Visiting Lecturer at UMass Dartmouth. Her poems have appeared in the Atlanta Review, Birmingham Poetry Review, Black Buzzard Review, Earth’s Daughters, and Igitur among others.
